Baccarat Glossary

Baccarat Terms

Baccarat – The gambling card game of French origin; a hand with a point count of 0

Bank – 1 of the 2 betting positions

Burn – To remove a card from play

Call Bet – A bet made by announcing it aloud not by placing money on table

Caller – The third dealer, who stands opposite the other two. He calls for bets and cards and announces the results of each hand.

Card-Handling Technique, America / European – A quick approach to examining cards.

Card-Handling Technique, Asian – A more slow, ‘bend and peek’ approach to examining the cards.

Change – A dealer cheer, used when there has just been a Tie

Chop – 2 or more singletons in a row on the score card.

Dealer – The person / people who run the game, handing out cards at the baccarat table

Hand – A single round of baccarat play, the cards dealt to either side (bank or player) in a round

Keeping score, Alternative method – Marking your score card in the horizontal fashion

Keeping score, Standard method – Marking your score card in the vertical fashion

Layout – The marked betting surface upon the game baccarat is played

Marker – A slip of paper that a bettor signs when he borrows money on his account at a casino

Monkey – A term for a face card or a 10; also one of the baccarat cheers used to request such a card

Natural – A hand with a count of 8 or 9

Pay the banker / player – A baccarat cheer shouted, when appropriate, by the person with the shoe.

Player – One of the 2 betting positions

Plunger – The small plastic object used to cover cards when they are removed from play

Riding the pony- Betting with a trend

Row Fours(s) – Any column with an entry in Rows 1,2,3, and 4 only

Row One(s) – Any column with an entry in Row 1 only

Row Threes(s) – Any column with an entry in Rows 1,2,3 only

Row Two(s) – Any column with an entry in Rows 1,2 only

Run – Any column with an entry in its second row, sometimes even further down.

Score card- The place where you record everything that happens in a shoe.

Series – A number of consecutive runs of various lengths

Shift supervisor – The boss of the supervisor, who overseas all tables in the baccarat area

Shoe – The physical container which holds the cards during baccarat; also refers to a game of baccarat, ie. “one shoe long”

Singleton – One event in a row

System – A method of play or betting in baccarat

Tie bet
– A wager on the Tie, not permitted in French baccarat

Unit – the chip value a bettor chooses to bet with
